I’ve been working for myself for over 20 years now, and this is the first time that I have truly had the opportunity to set up my own office space at home. In the past I’ve rented office space which has always had its limitations – small room, sharing the floor with staff, open-plan office, not enough space for my stuff, etc.
It’s taken a while, but my home office setup is finally taking shape (and is a bit of a mess in the pictures!).
I wanted to create a space where I could be in my own “hidden zone” while working during the day, so I put my desk behind some cube shelving. I’ve never liked having my back to the door or having my desk against a wall, so I’m forced to face a wall. So, this setup allows me to be comfortable.
The tech stuff
This is the stuff I use daily.
- iMac 27-inch 5K Retina 2019
- 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display
- Logitech MX Keys and MX Master 3 mouse
- Apple iPad with smart keyboard
- Apple Pencil first generation
- Nintendo Switch Lite for when I need a break or when I’m waiting for a deployment to finish
- Logitech Z200 speakers
- Marshall Major II Bluetooth headphones
- Apple Airpods
The non-tech stuff
- Field Notes Reporters Notebook for making quick notes here and there.
- Moleskine Dot Grid journal
- Sharpie S-Gel pens. I’ve only just discovered these, and they are totally awesome.
- Dixon Ticonderoga No2 pencils. These are the old-style yellow and green pencils with the pink eraser on the end.
I put some additional wall shelving and metal storage drawers adjacent to my desk. This is where my printer sits, along with an iMac Mini (hidden somewhere in the messy picture below!), which allows me to print from any device, including my iPhone or Android tablets.
It’s still a work-in-progress, but it feels like an office and a place where I can focus my creativity and get work done.
