RIP Shopit - My farewell to a great, undiscovered ecommerce platform

I still remember that day in 2009, where I was sat in my tiny two desk office in the Bolton Enterprise Centre, realising I had to build an ecommerce platform from scratch. It was raining outside and a client I’d known for a long time was starting a new online business and required a feature that no off-the-shelf shopping cart supported. And, I had a month to build it.

An example of poor UX design in ecommerce

Not too long ago I was invited to meet with a clothing company to discuss some fundamental improvements to their Shopify website. Disappointingly, after two hours of driving and an unproductive 10-minute meeting (where their only in-house developer didn’t show), I came away with a wasted journey.

Increasing the font size of messages in Gmail with a little CSS

I love the new desktop design of Gmail but I find the font size of the message composition window to be too small. Amazingly Google hasn’t added any options to change the font size other than providing the default “small”, “normal” and “large” (which is too large) choices.

Freelancing: Reducing those subscriptions!

Nowadays there’s a subscription for everything and it’s so easy to get carried away and sign up for everything you need to get your work done. But, the costs can quickly add up and before you know it most of the money you’re making is being consumed by subscription services.

Invoice and order confirmation email designs

When it comes to building ecommerce websites, the order confirmation emails and invoices are often neglected or forgotten and we make do with the default design or template. But these are all important features and if designed well can add that extra bit of professionalism, customer reassurance and also strengthen your brand image.

Experimenting with CSS grid

If you’re into front-end design and development then you would have no doubt heard about CSS grid which enables much more flexible layouts for web pages.

5 Shopify features I like the most

I’ve designed and built a lot of ecommerce sites during my career and have even built my own ecommerce platform. But, recently I started using Shopify as my chosen system and have been very impressed with how it all works.
